COMING THIS SUMMER
One curious tortoise.
One forbidden legend.
One journey that could change the desert forever.
The Story
In a quiet desert valley where the wind whispers through mesquite roots and the mountains stand like ancient guardians, a young desert tortoise named Tyler awakens from his long winter sleep—and begins to question the ancient rules that have guided his kind for generations.
Like every tortoise before him, Tyler has been taught the ancient ways of his species:
Live alone. Move carefully. Trust no creature beyond your shell.
And above all, obey the teachings of Stoneshell, the legendary tortoise who first showed their kind how to survive the harsh desert world.
But Tyler has always struggled with those rules.
Ever since he was a hatchling, Tyler has also heard the whispered legend of Tu’ku, a rebellious tortoise who long ago defied the teachings of Stoneshell and set out across the desert in search of something extraordinary.
According to the old stories, Tu’ku discovered a mysterious treasure—something powerful enough to promise endless survival, limitless strength, or perhaps something even greater. But when he refused to share it with the other animals, he was banished from the valley and disappeared into the distant mountains.
Most tortoises treat the story as a warning about ambition and pride.
To Tyler, it sounds like something else entirely.
Drawn to the world beyond his small stretch of desert, he cannot understand why tortoises must live in solitude when the valley around them is full of life. Lizards, birds, and countless other creatures move freely across the desert landscape.
Why must tortoises hide underground and keep to themselves?
When Tyler ventures beyond the familiar paths of his valley, his curiosity quickly leads him farther than he ever intended to go. A deadly encounter with a desert predator sends him on an unexpected journey far from home.
Soon Tyler finds himself lost in a world far larger—and more dangerous—than he imagined.
If the story is true, somewhere beyond the mountains lies Tu’ku’s Peak…and the mysterious treasure hidden there.
As Tyler struggles to find his way home, he encounters creatures he was warned never to speak with—animals who challenge everything he has been taught about the desert, survival, and the ancient rules of tortoisekind.
With every step, across the vast Mojave landscape, the questions grow harder to ignore.
Is Tu’ku’s treasure real? If it is, what power does it hold?
And most important of all—what kind of tortoise might Tyler become if he dared to search for it?
Blending elements of classic animal fables, epic journeys, and philosophical reflection, the novel follows one young tortoise as he begins to question everything his world believes about survival, independence, and the meaning of home.
Along the way, Tyler will face predators, powerful desert storms, ancient legends, and choices that could change not only his own future—but the future of animalkind itself.
For readers who love thoughtful animal adventures in the spirit of Watership Down, The Wind in the Willows, and Charlotte’s Web, The Secret of Tu’ku’s Peak: A Tortoise Odyssey offers a timeless story about finding one’s place in a vast and mysterious world—and discovering that even the slowest traveler may be destined for the greatest journey of all.
